Darksiders(aka Legend of Zelda)

So today I want to talk about games that copy other games and why this is not a terrible thing if done right. As you can see from the title Darksiders is game that shares most of its gameplay with the famous Legend of Zelda franchise. Now there are two sides to this argument, one side is that people feel that they are ripping off other games and the other side is they are playing homage to their respective idles. Now first all in the case with Darksiders and Legend of Zelda, in my opinion it did a great job of playing homage to Legend of Zelda, while at the same time feeling unique in its own regards. This is where I feel people in the first argument are a bit confused. The developers didn’t just take the Legend of Zelda series and throw a different coat of paint on it, they developed a whole story and atmosphere to be rapped around the similar mechanics that people really enjoy with the Legend of Zelda. The game shared a similar dungeon themes along with weapons and items. Now I strongly believe there is nothing wrong with this approach to designing a game, but at the same time I feel as if its our job to the gaming community to give them fresh and original products. Now making games isn’t always about doing something fresh and original because to be honest fresh and original don’t always sell. When it comes down to it the companies have to pay the bills so if you see people really like games such as Legend of Zelda, Devil May Cry, God of War, etc. then why not take what makes those games so much fun and use that as the core of the idea you are going to build around it.
